Welcome to the wonderful and colorful world of Charlie Chaplin! From his screen debut in 1914, through his last completed film in 1967, Chaplin revolutionized the entertainment industry and helped found the modern film. As actor, writer, director, producer, composer and choreographer, his lyrical pairing of comedy and melancholy prompted critics to acknowledge films as art and attracted world audiences.

Charlie Chaplin was born in London in 1889 and came to America in 1910. Chaplin introduced his Little Tramp character in the 1914 film, Kid's Auto Races. By 1920, "Chaplinitis" was rampant around the world, accompanied by a flood of Chaplin dances, dolls, comic books and toys.

In a 1995 worldwide survey of film critics, Chaplin was voted the greatest actor in movie history. He was the first, and to date the last, person to control every aspect of the film-making process -producing, casting, directing, writing, scoring and editing the movies in which he starred.
