Jaromir was born in Hnidousy, a town near Kladno in Czechoslovakia, on February 15, 1972. Since childhood, he always had a secret dream of being the best hockey player in the world. When Jaromir was 6 years old and was playing in a tournament against older kids, the coach of the other team asked his father why he wasn’t enrolled in a hockey school (only for 3rd graders and up) and his father said "he’s only in the grade 1". The coach walked away and shook his head and said "unbelievable". Jagr’s team won the game and he scored 2 goals.

Before playing in the NHL, he played in the Czech league for two years. He played ninety games for Kladno and chalked up 70 points. He also played for Czechoslovakia in the 1990 World Championship in Switzerland when he was only 18 and helped earn his country the bronze medal.

In the 1990 NHL Draft, he was chosen fifth overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins, where his idol Mario Lemieux was playing. He was thrilled to be playing with Mario and admits to having him sign hockey cards for him, up to six months after they had been playing together.

He had a lot of success early on in the NHL. In Jaromir's rookie year in 1990-91, he accumulated 27 goals and 30 assists. Then in the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons, he was fortunate to win the Stanley Cup in back to back years. In the 1994-95 season he won his first Art Ross Trophy for most points in the NHL regular season.

Jagr is currently holding the following NHL records:
Most points ever by a right winger: 149 (1995/1996)
Most assists by a right winger: 87
Most assists in Stanley Cup finals by a rookie.
Youngest player to score a hat trick (he was 18)
